web review Website Review: National Institutes of Health Center for Disease Control and Prevention Purpose Health care providers and health care consumers increasingly rely on the internet for current health information and resources. This learning activity provides the student with the opportunity to review the websites for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), two government-sponsored agencies responsible for promoting health, providing health-related information and resources, and disseminating research. Outcomes The student will: 1. Gain appreciation for the federal government’s role in providing health information and resources through the CDC and NIH 2. Analyze the content of the web site 3. Apply content of the web site into professional practice Directions Please read carefully • Visit CDC.gov o Spend some time exploring the website; learn about the role of the CDC and what the website offers o Provide introductory information: What is the role/mission of the CDC (What is the CDC’s purpose? What does this organization do?) o Summarize information/resources that the website provides on a specific topic of interest to you. To do this, click on “Diseases and Conditions” from the home page. If you do not see a topic that interests you on that short list, click on the “More” link, which will take you to a larger list of popular health topics. Choose one, click on it, and review the type of information and resources the CDC offers for your chosen topic. In addition to a summary of what is provided, include interesting or surprising data/statistics relevant to your topic. o Include a critique of the entire CDC website: How easy was it to navigate? What did you like best about the CDC website? Were there any “negatives” to the website? Do you think the website has use for health care providers, health care consumers, or both? Why? • Visit NIH.gov o Spend time exploring the website; learn about the role of the NIH and what the website offers o Provide introductory information: Summarize the role/mission of the NIH (What is the NIH’s purpose? What does this organization do?) o Summarize information/resources that the website provides under the “Research and Training” tab. Choose one item under the Research and Training tab and provide your thoughts about how it could be helpful in your professional nursing career. o Summarize one specific institute from the NIH. Return to the NIH homepage and under the “Institutes at NIH” heading, click on “List of Institutes, Centers, & Offices”. From this page, direct your attention to the 20 or so National Institutes listed. Choose one that matches your area of interest or practice. Summarize what this particular institute does. Click into the specific institute you have chosen and share one highlight, research data, or piece of news that caught your attention. o Include a critique of the entire NIH website: How easy was it to navigate? What did you like best about the NIH website? Were there any “negatives” to the website? Do you think the website has use for health care providers, health care consumers, or both? Why? PLEASE NOTE: Information must be clearly organized, labeled, and presented for each website. All components of the assignment must be addressed to receive credit.
