Case Study 2: Proper Technique Instruction Coach Ed, a volunteer parent who played high school football, is serving as a high school football coach working with a group of 20 freshman players on tackling. The players are wearing helmets, shoulder pads, jerseys and shorts. He lines them up with a partner and tells them that the first one to get their partner “on the ground” will advance to the next round of tackling. He asks if there are any questions, but he blows the whistle before giving time for players to raise a hand, and the tackling begins. When the ten “winners” prevail, Coach Ed summons over five senior running backs, hands them a football, and assigns two freshman to each senior. Coach Ed tells the seniors to drop back 20 yards so “they can get up a good pace” and has them run at the two assigned freshman at full speed. Coach Ed tells the freshman they “better go 1 high and 1 low if you want to have a chance to bring ‘em down”. One of the freshman players is launched a good ten feet after contact and lands on his back, striking his head. The player struggles to get up, and even falls a couple more times. Some of the players show concern to Coach Ed who replies “Aw, he’s fine! Just got his bell rung!” Support your statements with evidence from the Required Studies and your research.
