Formation of excess mucus on the breathing channels, thickening of air passages, inelasticity of air passages or destruction of the alveoli are the most common causes of the ailment. COPD patients experience breathlessness and are put on mechanical ventilation to aid them to breathe. Mechanical ventilation mostly is in the intensive care unit, and patients undergoing the same are vulnerable to anxiety, pain, and discomfort. The article titled “Managing dyspnea in patients with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A Canadian Thoracic Society Clinical Practice guideline” was documented to assist people suffering from COPD and medics who have specialized in COPD. After an extensive literature review of past articles, the author found out that several studies have tackled the topic. Previous studies covered the use of opioids, anxiolytics, antidepressants, and several nonpharmacological interventions (Respir, 2011). They found out that the use of nonpharmacological techniques doesn’t relief patients of dyspnea but modifies the emotions of the patient hence reducing the feeling of breathlessness. The use of oxygen supplement was found to help in the recovery while music brings emotional comfort and reduces the anxiety. “The effects of therapy on comfort in the mechanically ventilated patient in intensive care unit” is an article describing a study that was conducted to find out the impact of music on the anxiety, pain and comfort levels of patients on mechanical ventilation. The author conducted an extensive literature review on comfort and its relation to pain and anxiety, and in the history of music therapy as a means of intervention. The literature review is relevant to the study as it covers the history, theories and past articles that included the variables in consideration. The research draws a conceptual framework from the mid-range theory of holistic comfort by Katherine Kolcaba which is common in psycho-spiritual disciplines. Three women and two men in mechanical ventilation, who were deemed fit for the study were selected. The selected patients had to be eighteen years older or more, alert, and not receiving intravenous sedation. The quasi-experimental research relied on a pre-test and post-test design whereby the subjects used as sample served as their control. Three dependent variables were measured in the study. They were anxiety, pain, and comfort. The factors relied on psychological factors like blood pressure variation, respiratory rate, and heart rate. In the measurement of pain, a Numeric Graphic Rating Pain Scale was used while a Faces Anxiety Scale was used to determine the degree of anxiety in the patients. The data was collected from January 2005 to January 2006 and the results presented to ICU nursing staff. After completion of the study, the results were entered into the statistical package for social sciences program for data analysis. The sample of the study consisted of only five participants, and this cannot be used conclusively to represent all other mechanically ventilated patients. The study also did not include patients who could not speak hence the study was limited only to the few patients who were alert. In future, a larger study samples should be used. The study should also test whether the patients’ comfort level is affected by the choice of music. The study revealed that music therapy increased comfort levels but did not significantly alter the pain, blood pressure, heartbeat, anxiety, and respiratory rate (Besel, 2006). The findings were of significance importance as nurses could design interventions that could improve the comfort levels of mechanically ventilated patients. Quantitative research, unlike qualitative research, uses numerical data to hence making statistical analysis possible. This data is considered to be more scientifically accurate as the user can use of statistical figures to make conclusions or recommendations. On the contrary, in qualitative research information of how much or to what extent is not available. In the quantitative research method, parameters meant to quantify the exact value of the variables were applied (Besel, 2006). A numerical graph rating pain scale marked 0-10 were used. Patients selected the scale according to how much pain they felt. Designing this method can be tricky as a small chart, like painful or painless can lead to meaningless data. More meaningful results are obtainable by widening the scale (Lok, 2013). However, too much widening will result in meaningless data. For qualitative research, the patients were asked open-ended questions where they could describe the perceived effects of music on their comfort. Low-pitched music with a tempo similar to the heartbeat was found to be very soothing and brings the much-desired comfort to both myocardial infarction patients and mechanically ventilated patients. The research article pointed out that anxiety alleviates the perception of pain hence treating this pain is critical in the recovery process. Since the researchers did not quantify the variables in their method of experiment, the resultant data doesn’t express the amount of anxiety, pain or discomfort reduced by the therapy (Moore, 2015). For a research method to be scientifically accurate, it must meet several conditions like parsimony, falsifiability, and precision. Data from qualitative research, methods lack the above hence cannot be considered as scientifically satisfactory. The lack of hypotheses on qualitative data means that the data is neither falsifiable nor precise hence not scientifically adequate. Both qualitative and quantitative research designs are essential in product development. The numeric information gained from quantitative research helps in the determination of the magnitude of the variables, and other factors are descriptive. The qualitative design, on the other hand, helps in determination of the behavioral patterns of the variables and is most appropriate in the description of human behavior. However, when researching on certain phenomena, it is not easy to quantify the variables. This kind of research design is not appropriate for large samples as it is expensive and laborious. The quantitative method has more statistical power and suitable in the discovery of trends. For effectiveness, it is recommendable that both methods are used.
